I am a sucker for a well made stylish and unique indie flick that even though it won’t be mainstream, it can still become easily one of the best movies of the year - and I think Kajillionaire has a chance to reach that level. Movies like this remind me of Wes Anderson’s work, a creative genius who thrives on the notion of “dare to be different”. Writer/director Miranda July hasn’t sat in the big chair since her 2011 film The Future, so this is certainly a big deal for her. Kajillionaire tells the story of a young woman who finds her life turned upside down when her criminal parents invite an outsider to join them on a major heist they're planning.
The trailer is great giving us just enough to be invested, and certainly has the art house feel to it which makes sense as Kajillionaire was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival. Even with a unique feel I do think the film be versatile enough to appeal to a wider audience especially with the cast consisting of Westworld’s Evan Rachel Wood, Richard Jenkins (Step Brothers), Debra Winger (The Ranch), and Gina Rodriguez (Annihilation).
I am definitely looking forward to Kajillionaire and can’t wait for what will surely be a movie that you can talk about for hours and can’t wait to see again. People always complain about remakes and the lack of originality coming out of Hollywood, well look no further than Kajillionaire. So instead of complaining be sure to support this film when it hits limited theaters and On-Demand soon after. If I had to guess, Miranda July is officially back in the game.
Kajillionaire is set to hit select theaters on September 18th.
