I may be biased but there is nothing quite like a brand-new trailer dropping to get the day started, and when you get something like The Secrets We Keep you know it’s going to be a damn good day. The Bleecker Street film brings together a stellar cast lead by Joel Kinnaman and Noomi Rapace, both of Swedish heritage, as well as The Mindy Project star Chris Messina and actress Amy Seimetz (Pet Sematary, Alien: Covenant).
In post-WWII America, a woman (Rapace), rebuilding her life in the suburbs with her husband (Messina), kidnaps her neighbor (Kinnaman) and seeks vengeance for the heinous war crimes she believes he committed against her.
I felt like the trailer was perfectly put together, leaving viewers with more questions than answers as opposed to showing us a condensed version of the entire film - man that pisses me off. I love the psychological element as it dives into PTSD and the trauma of war. The human brain is incredible but can be notoriously unreliable when suffering from severe mental trauma. I genuinely felt for Kinneman realizing it is entirely possible he has been mistaken for someone else, but don’t get me wrong I will be cheering if he is proven to be who she thinks he is and gets exactly what he deserves.
I love this pairing of Kinnaman and Rapace, both actors who have more than proven themselves in gritty roles. I loved Rapace in the somewhat under-the-radar crime drama The Drop alongside Tom Hardy, and Kinnaman will forever stick with me for the fantastic role he played as Holder in the crime drama series The Killing.
The film is directed by Yuval Adler, who also wrote the script alongside Ryan Covington. Both men are fairly unknown aside from Adler directing the thriller the Operative (2019) starring Diane Kruger and Martin Freeman. I have yet to check it out but with that cast I think it is worth a look.
The Secrets We Keep will hit select theaters on September 16th and will be available On-Demand October 16th.
