At this point the chemistry between writer/director Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray is undeniable after the hit film Lost in Translation (2003), and they are set to light the screen up yet again. Aside from 2015’s Netflix special A Very Murray Christmas, the two have been haven’t shared a set in 17 years. Lost in Translation earned Coppola a Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and also helped Murray snag a nomination for Best Actor as well.
After a long wait the duo teams up again with the comedy drama On The Rocks. In the film, Murray stars alongside Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans. Jones plays a young mother who reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father, played by Murray, on an adventure through New York. The trailer is great in my opinion and sets the stage for an adult coming-of-age comedy drama allowing viewers the opportunity to witness a unique father and daughter bond. In an interview earlier this year with 92Y, Coppola talked about the dynamic of the film:
“It’s kind of the clash of how they look at relationships and also how your relationship with your parent affects your relationships in your life. … It’s the two of them as a father and daughter sort of on a little adventure to spy on her husband. It’s a lot of them talking about life and men and women over martinis in New York.”
On The Rocks is an A24 and Apple TV+ joint release as part of their new partnership, and although they have yet to give any specifics on the release plans or a specific date, they did confirm it will get an October 2020 release in theaters and on Apple TV+. Watch the first trailer below.
