The Woman in the Window, a drama thriller starring Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, and Anthony Mackie, was one of the many films temporarily shelved from its initial theatrical release due to the pandemic. The film is based on the A.J. Finn novel of the same name, which I did read and really enjoyed. It is an immersive page-turner that will keep you guessing right until the very end. Naturally, I was looking forward to the movie hitting theaters so I have been keeping an eye on what the now Disney owned 20th Century Studios decided to do with the film. A number of studios have made the decision to sell the rights to some big name movies that were initially slated to hit theaters.
It has been confirmed that streaming giant Netflix is working on finalizing a deal with 20th Century Studios to acquire exclusive rights to the film which would of course make it a direct-to-streaming movie.
The Woman in the Window is very much a meant for adults sort of story hence the R-rating, so the fact that Disney is working to cut ties prior to release is no surprise really especially considering all of the moving parts with the release calendar heading into 2021. Also, no way would this movie make it to Disney+.
The Woman in the Window tells the story of an agoraphobic child psychologist who befriends a neighbor across the street from her New York City brownstone, only to see her own life turned upside down when the woman disappears and she suspects foul play. It shares some similarities to Gillian Flynn’s The Girl on the Train with the notion that nothing is at it seems. The cast also includes Wyatt Russell, Bryan Tyree Henry, and Julianne Moore.
The deal is still in the works with no word on when the Woman in the Window will make its debut on Netflix, but we will surely keep you updated. Watch the latest trailer below.
