Stock has been sky high for the drama Charm City Kings, inspired by the documentary 12 O’Clock Boys, ever since it was acknowledged as an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival, a great honor for any film looking for a little hype.
Starring Jahi Di’Allo Winston and rapper/actor Meek Mill, who provides a breakout performance, Charm City Kings is a gritty coming-of-age tale. Fourteen-year old Mouse desperately wants to join The Midnight Clique, the infamous Baltimore dirt bike riders who rule the summertime streets. When he manages to catch the attention of Midnight's leader, Blax (Meek Mill), who takes him under his wing, Mouse soon finds himself torn between the straight-and-narrow and a road filled with fast money and violence.
I am intrigued by the bike/atv scene in Baltimore which is highlighted in Ryan Coogler’s Creed, and have been keeping a close eye on this film for quite some time. Once HBO acquired the rights to release on its HBO Max platform, I knew it was only a matter of time before I would finally check this out myself.
