Gold is a 2022 survival thriller film directed and co-written by Anthony Hayes, filmed entirely in the Australian outback. Hayes also co-stars in the film The U.S. rights were sold to Screen Media Films after a bidding war.
In the not too distant future, two drifters traveling through the desert stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found and the dream of immense wealth and greed takes hold. They hatch a plan to excavate their bounty with one man leaving to secure the necessary tools. The other man remains and must endure harsh desert elements, ravenous wild dogs, and mysterious intruders, while battling the sinking suspicion that he has been abandoned to his own fate.
Starring Zac Efron, Susie Porter, and Anthony Hayes. Efron confirmed after filming concluded he broke a bone in his hand early on, but kept it to himself so that he wouldn’t stall production. Originally plans were made to bring in sand from a nearby desert for a sandstorm scene, but actual sandstorms hit the location hard nearly shutting down filming for a day, but the cast made the decision to film during it making for a realistic sequence of events. A camera was strapped to the back of one of the cinematographers.
Gold made its debut in select theaters on March 11th, and is also available VOD and streaming exclusively in Australia on Stan. Watch the official trailer below.
